Power BI v Tableau – Spine Chart Comparison

Inspired by a post late last year of a spine chart by one of my LinkedIn connections I wanted to try and recreate it in Power BI. First I re-created it in Tableau, then tried in Power BI.

Tableau Spine Chart
Power BI Spine Chart

It was more difficult in Power BI. One visual in Tableau became three visuals (table, stacked bar chart, scatter plot) in Power BI with a lot of tweaking:

  • the table had to be unlinked from the slicer
  • creating measures for the stacked bar chart (left white, left grey, left dark grey, black, right dark grey, right white)
  • scatter plot on top of stacked bar chart with x-axis transparent

Even then I wasn't able to finely tune the alignment and settled on aligning the middle rows of the table and the stacked bar chart.

Previously, I posted about Power BI coming out on top in regards to the radar chart. This time Tableau came out on top for spine charts.

Score tied at 1:1
